Indiana Jones and his buddy Short Round are facing mortal danger in the temple of doom. A spiked wall is inching in on them. The only one who could save them is nightclub singer Willie - who is unfortunately paralyzed by fear of bugs at the moment.
"Help me", Willie screams.
"Shut up", shouts Indy. "Look around, there must be a fulcrum release lever somewhere!"
"A what...?" Willie cries.
Willie then finds the lever, after screaming hysterically that she can't do this! Indy, I can't do this! The men are saved, but shortly after, Indy has to stop Willie from pressing a button that would reactivate the booby trap.
Why thank you, Hollywood. Pretty-to-look-at whiny airhead with a bug phobia - if only I was more like Willie!
Comic artist Alison Bechdel created the "Bechdel Test" in 1985, it was based on the idea of a friend who in turn was inspired by Virginia Woolf. Without thinking too much about it, she designed a litmus test that became popular in 2011 after the New Yorker mentioned it in a profile on Anna Faris.
A movie passes the Bechdel Test when it features
1) two (named) female characters
2) who talk to each other
3) about something other than a man
The bar doesn't seem to be that high. But on the Test's website, there are big discussions whether it counts when two leading ladys in the Avengers have a conversation about "The Vision", who is an android, but effectively a man.
For most movies, the verdict is clear. Women don't talk to each other in "Baywatch", or in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Even movies aimed at children like "Finding Nemo" oder "Toy Story" 1 and 2 fail the test. Musical "La La Land" and "Lara Croft" don't pass it either. While the last one features a strong female lead, she obviously doesn't need friends, or colleagues, or a mother, as she doesn't interact with a single other women for the whole ninety minutes.
"The Fast and the Furious" is a Hollywood franchise that spectacularly fails the Bechdel Test. Women seem to be put on screen mainly to display their belly button. Actress Michelle Rodriguez, who starred in six of eight movies, made it clear last year that she's hoping for change, and for meatier roles for women - otherwise she would leave the franchise.
Alison Bechdel, who was awarded a MacArthur genius grant in 2014, didn't foresee the longterm effect of her test. It doesn't play a major role in her artistic endeavours. She is aware of the test's limitations, and she says she also enjoys movies that aren't up to par, like "The Grand Budapest Hotel".
Back to Indiana Jones - Steven Spielberg, who by the way had casted his wife Kate Capshaw as damsel-in-distress Willie, might be heeding the signs of the times. In an interview with the Sun he said that the next installment could be Harrison Ford's last one, and that the nazi-beating archeology professor should change... into a woman. "We'd have to call her Indiana Joan", he said.
If done well, we might also be ready for Jane McClane.
Alison Bechdel is optimistic that things are changing for the better in the film industry."There are little girls growing up right now, exposed to everything that's happening in the culture right now, who are going to blow us all out of the water with the movies they direkt in 10 or 20 years."
Meanwhile, the second installment of the Wonderwoman series is in the making. The first part was very well received, and israeli lead actress Gal Gadot was everything male and female Justice League fans wanted to see. And needed to hear: "We have to find the men who can do this", someone tells amazone Diana. "I am the man who can", says Wonderwoman. Chessmate. Flamingo out!

“Einen was…?” heult Willie verzweifelt.
Willie findet den Hebel und drückt ihn, nachdem sie mehrmals hysterisch geschrien hat, sie könne das nicht! Indy, ich kann das nicht! Die Männer entkommen knapp, aber kurz danach muss Indy Willie davon abhalten, den Falltürmechanismus erneut zu aktivieren.
Na danke, Hollywood! Hübsche Heulsuse mit Käferphobie - ich wünschte, ich wäre mehr wie Willie.

Man könnte meinen, das sei keine grosse Herausforderung. Auf der Website zum Test finden aber grosse Diskussionen darüber statt, ob es gilt, wenn zwei Avengers-Heldinnen miteinander über “The Vision” sprechen. Es handelt sich um eine Szene von wenigen Sekunden, und “The Vision” ist zwar ein Androide, aber eigentlich ein Mann.
Bei den meisten Filmen ist das Verdikt aber klar. Weder in "Baywatch" sprechen Frauen miteinander, noch in der gesamten Lord Of The Rings-Trilogie. Auch Kinderfilme wie “Finding Nemo” oder "Toy Story" 1 und 2 rasseln durch den Test. Selbst Musicalfilm "La La Land" und Actionfilm "Lara Croft" erfüllen die Bedingungen nicht. Bei letzterem dreht sich zwar der ganze Film um eine Frau, aber die braucht offenbar weder Freundin noch Kollegin noch Mutter, sie interagiert in neunzig Minuten mit keiner anderen Frau.
Kläglich scheitert die gesamte “Fast and the Furious”-Reihe. Frauen sind bauchfrei und allein unter Männern unterwegs. Michelle Rodriguez, die in sechs von acht Filmen der Franchise dabei war, drückte letztes Jahr auf Instagram ihr Bedauern darüber aus, wie mager die Frauenrollen gehalten sind.
Alison Bechdel ist erstaunt darüber, wie sich der Test etabliert hat, er spielt in ihrem künstlerischen Schaffen, das 2014 mit dem MacArthur “Genius Grant” gekrönt wurde, eine nebensächliche Rolle. Sie hält ihn nicht für perfekt, und mag auch Filme, die ihn nicht bestehen, wie zum Beispiel “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
